CenterPoint Energy Ohio SCO Rate

The CenterPoint Energy Ohio Standard Choice Offer (SCO) rate is $0.486 per Ccf for October 1 – October 31, 2026, per the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) chart. The SCO is the default rate for natural gas that PUCO says a choice-eligible customer pays after deciding not to shop for a supplier. For gas, the number to hold an offer against is the SCO, and Ohio's gas billing rule requires a price-to-compare statement on residential bills (Ohio Administrative Code 4901:1-13-11).

Updated

In short

  • The SCO is the default gas rate for CenterPoint Energy Ohio customers who do not shop, priced per Ccf.
  • PUCO's chart states the figure and the dates it covers.
  • Delivery charges and sales tax are not in it, so add both on each side.
  • The rate changes monthly, so test an offer against several months, not one.

We last read this figure on October 1, 2026. For later changes, check CenterPoint Energy Ohio on Energy Choice Ohio, PUCO's consumer site for comparing electric and gas offers.

PUCO says the SCO is a monthly variable rate: the NYMEX month-end settlement price, which is the New York Mercantile Exchange price for natural gas, plus a retail price adjustment set at auction and held for twelve months.

PUCO's Apples to Apples chart lists supplier offers for CenterPoint Energy Ohio territory side by side. Our Apples to Apples CenterPoint Energy Ohio page walks through that chart.

What does a rate per Ccf mean for CenterPoint Energy Ohio?

A Ccf is one hundred cubic feet of natural gas, and an Mcf is one thousand (Ohio Administrative Code 4901:1-29-01). PUCO's chart prints CenterPoint Energy Ohio's rate per Ccf. The chart adds that CenterPoint converts the market price to a price per Mcf, adds the adjustment, and then converts the result to a rate per Ccf for billing.

Check which unit your bill uses before you multiply, and never set a gas rate beside an electric price to compare.

When does the CenterPoint Energy Ohio rate reset next?

The current period runs October 1 – October 31, 2026, so the next one starts November 1, 2026. PUCO says the SCO changes monthly, so expect a new number then and check PUCO's chart for it.

Where do you find the SCO on your CenterPoint Energy Ohio bill?

Ohio's gas billing rule requires every bill to show the gas rate in dollars and cents per Mcf or Ccf, and residential bills to carry a price-to-compare statement that points shoppers to the default rate (Ohio Administrative Code 4901:1-13-11).

PUCO says the SCO rate is on your natural gas bill. CenterPoint says your bill has two parts, the gas itself and delivery from CenterPoint, and that bill format and line item names may vary. Its choice page also carries a table of historical and current SCO rates and says the SCO price excludes taxes.

If a supplier or a community aggregation program serves you, the SCO is not your rate. It still benchmarks a renewal offer.

How do you test an offer against the CenterPoint Energy Ohio SCO?

A fixed offer below the SCO may cost less. It may also cost more, because of a monthly fee, an early termination fee (ETF), the charge for leaving a contract early, or a variable rate. Chart rates leave out delivery charges. Gas bought from a supplier or under the SCO is subject to sales tax, and county sales tax is not in a supplier's rate (PUCO's gas bill guide), so add delivery and tax on each side.

Take a household that uses 100 Ccf of gas in a month. This is an example, not your usage. At $0.486 per Ccf, the gas itself costs $48.60 for that month, before delivery and tax.

Now picture a fixed offer, made up for this example, priced at $0.456 per Ccf. The same usage costs $45.60 before any fee. Add any other fee in your offer terms, including a broker's service fee, then compare the totals.

Gas charges by monthly use at the CenterPoint Energy Ohio SCO and at the example offer
Monthly gas useAt the SCOAt the example offer
50 Ccf$24.30$22.80
100 Ccf$48.60$45.60
150 Ccf$72.90$68.40

Staying on the SCO can be the right call when:

  • every fixed offer sits above most recent months in the history table;
  • a monthly fee or an early termination fee erases the gap at your usage; or
  • you may move before the term ends.

PUCO says there is no deadline to shop, and switching does not ensure a lower bill (PUCO's choice FAQs). After you pick a supplier, CenterPoint Energy Ohio mails you a confirmation notice. You have seven business days from its postmark date to rescind, by calling or writing to the utility (Ohio Administrative Code 4901:1-29-10). Our energy choice Ohio guide covers how switching works.

Frequently asked questions

What does the CenterPoint Energy Ohio SCO cover?

It covers the gas itself, priced per Ccf: $0.486 per Ccf for October 1 – October 31, 2026, per PUCO's chart. It leaves out delivery charges and sales tax. CenterPoint Energy Ohio bills delivery whichever supplier you use, so your total cost per Ccf is higher than the SCO.

How often does the CenterPoint Energy Ohio SCO change?

PUCO says the SCO changes monthly, because it follows the New York Mercantile Exchange month-end gas price. The current period runs October 1 – October 31, 2026, so the next one starts November 1, 2026. A fixed offer holds its price for its term, so check several months of the chart before you compare.

Is the CenterPoint Energy Ohio SCO higher or lower than a year ago?

Today's CenterPoint Energy Ohio SCO is down 6.5% from $0.520 per Ccf (October 2025), the same period a year earlier. Gas prices move with the market, so the two periods do not forecast the next one. Read the dates on PUCO's chart before you compare.

Is the CenterPoint Energy Ohio SCO the same as an electric price to compare?

Not exactly. For gas, the number to hold an offer against is the SCO. Ohio's gas billing rule, Ohio Administrative Code 4901:1-13-11, requires a price-to-compare statement on residential gas bills. Gas rates are priced per Ccf, not per kilowatt-hour, so never set a gas rate beside an electric one.

Can I cancel a gas supplier switch with CenterPoint Energy Ohio?

Yes, for a short time. CenterPoint Energy Ohio mails you a confirmation notice after a supplier enrolls you. You have seven business days from its postmark date to rescind, by calling the utility or writing to it, under Ohio Administrative Code 4901:1-29-10. Read your offer terms for other cancellation rights.
