CenterPoint Ohio Gas Rates: The Default Rate, Your Bill and Your Choices

CenterPoint Ohio gas rates start with the Standard Choice Offer (SCO), the price of the gas itself when you have not picked a supplier. The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) chart puts it at $0.486 per Ccf for October 1 – October 31, 2026. CenterPoint, formerly Vectren Energy Delivery of Ohio, bills it per Ccf, one hundred cubic feet.

Updated

In short

  • CenterPoint's default is the Standard Choice Offer (SCO), the NYMEX gas price plus a retail price adjustment, converted to a rate per Ccf for billing.
  • CenterPoint says the SCO is a safety net and a variable rate, and its price excludes taxes.
  • Your bill has two parts, the gas and CenterPoint's regulated delivery, and CenterPoint says it does not endorse any supplier.
  • To use the SCO again after a supplier contract, you cancel it or let it expire. CenterPoint then assigns you to an SCO supplier.

CenterPoint's own choice page carries a table of historical and current SCO rates. It says an auction picks the SCO suppliers each year, and that all SCO supplier prices are exactly the same.

CenterPoint says the SCO is designed as "a safety net to help ensure that natural gas suppliers are available". If you choose no supplier, you are signed up to an SCO supplier automatically and charged the standard rate. Because most of that rate follows the market price, CenterPoint says an SCO customer receives a variable rate.

Our CenterPoint SCO rate page tracks the number and when it resets. Apples to Apples CenterPoint Ohio shows how to read PUCO's chart, and the natural gas rates guide compares all four utilities.

How have CenterPoint Ohio gas rates moved over the past year?

Gas prices swing with the market, which PUCO says can change dramatically from one month to the next (PUCO's SCO guide). In the last twelve months we hold for CenterPoint, the lowest default was $0.4388 per Ccf (May 2026) and the highest was $1.0182 per Ccf (February 2026).

What does CenterPoint's delivery charge cover, and what does its SCO price leave out?

CenterPoint's delivery charge covers its pipes, meter reading and emergency response, and its SCO price excludes taxes. Its monthly gas bill has two parts. The first is the gas, sold to you by an SCO supplier or by a certified Choice supplier. The second is the delivery charge, and CenterPoint warns that bill format and line item names may vary.

Under Ohio Administrative Code 4901:1-13-11, every bill shows the gas rate per Mcf or Ccf. A residential bill must also say it "may be useful to compare supplier offers with the standard choice offer (SCO) rate".

CenterPoint says a retail price adjustment (RPA) is a supplier-related charge that may appear on your bill, and that it does not profit from the charge itself. PUCO's gas bill guide says gas bought under an SCO program is subject to sales or use tax. Add the tax when you total a bill.

How does energy choice work for CenterPoint gas customers?

CenterPoint says you can choose a certified Choice supplier or take gas from an SCO supplier, and that it does not endorse any particular supplier or offer. When you are ready to switch, you contact the supplier directly. The supplier will ask for the CenterPoint account number on your latest bill.

CenterPoint says it still delivers the gas, keeps its pipes and responds to emergencies whichever supplier you pick. It adds that supplier rates are generally not set by PUCO, so prices move with the market, the type of plan and whether the rate is fixed or variable. Some customer-owned piping and appliance issues may be yours to fix.

A city or county may also run a gas aggregation program under Ohio Revised Code 4929.26. Our Ohio energy choice guide explains how those programs fit in.

Staying on the SCO can be the better choice when every fixed offer on PUCO's chart for CenterPoint Energy Ohio sits above recent default periods, when a monthly fee or an early termination fee wipes out the gap, or when you may move soon. An early termination fee belongs to a supplier contract, not to the default. The risk to weigh on a fixed offer is a rate that turns variable once its term ends. Our guide to staying on the default covers the trade-off.

What happens when a CenterPoint supplier contract ends?

At CenterPoint, you use an SCO supplier again by canceling your Choice supplier contract or letting it expire, and CenterPoint then assigns you to one of the SCO suppliers.

Your supplier must send you a written notice forty-five to ninety days before a residential contract ends. If the contract does not renew by itself, that notice must say which service you will default to (Ohio Administrative Code 4901:1-29-10). Where it applies, a contract must also say that a customer who returns to the utility on their own may pay a price other than its tariff rate (Ohio Administrative Code 4901:1-29-11). Our natural gas rates guide explains how to return to the default.

Frequently asked questions

Does CenterPoint mark up the price of natural gas?

CenterPoint says it does not mark up increases in natural gas supply cost, and that it passes supplier-related charges through as the supplier provides them. Its delivery charges are separate, and PUCO regulates them. Ask your supplier about supply prices and contract terms.

Does CenterPoint recommend a gas supplier?

No. CenterPoint says it does not endorse any particular supplier or offer, and it asks customers to verify contact details, eligibility and pricing with the supplier and with PUCO. PUCO's chart lists only certified suppliers that are actively enrolling, in random order, so no row is a recommendation.

Why can a CenterPoint gas bill rise when delivery has not changed?

CenterPoint says a bill usually rises because the cost of natural gas changed. It lists market price swings, the end of a supplier's promotional rate, a renewal at a higher rate and a different pricing structure, such as fixed against variable. Delivery is regulated and is separate from those supply changes.

Can a CenterPoint SCO supplier also sell Choice contracts?

Yes. CenterPoint says an SCO supplier can also be a Choice supplier. The two are separate offers. Every SCO supplier charges the same price, while a Choice supplier's rate depends on its plan, so read a Choice contract's term, monthly fee and early termination fee before you sign.

When do CenterPoint's SCO suppliers change?

CenterPoint says the annual SCO auction typically happens at the beginning of each year and takes effect April 1. The same or new suppliers may win. The auction picks the suppliers for the next twelve months and sets the retail price adjustment that is added to the monthly gas price.
