What does an Enbridge Gas Ohio bill show besides the gas?

Enbridge says the Current Charges section of your bill lists the supplier's name and, below it, the rate plan, such as "Standard Choice Offer (SCO)". The total current charges are Enbridge's charges plus the gas supplier's charges.

Enbridge's bill page says gas use is measured in Mcf. It shows a monthly usage comparison with average daily temperatures, your usage over the last year and your total annual use. Multiplying the gap between the current and last meter reading by the billing rate gives the gas cost.

Under Ohio Administrative Code 4901:1-13-11, every bill shows the gas rate per Mcf or Ccf. A residential bill must also say it "may be useful to compare supplier offers with the standard choice offer (SCO) rate".

PUCO's gas bill guide names an Enbridge surcredit rider. It reimburses customers for commodity-sales charges once they no longer buy gas from the utility. The same guide says gas bought under the SCO or from a supplier is subject to sales or use tax.

How does Energy Choice work for Enbridge Gas Ohio customers?

Enbridge calls its program Energy Choice and describes it as statewide. You may buy your gas from a supplier certified by PUCO. Enbridge still delivers it, answers emergencies, reads your meter and bills you. It recommends comparing offers on PUCO's site first.

Enbridge says PIPP Plus customers are not eligible. It also says eligible customers must have no past-due balances outside a payment plan. If you are eligible and choose no supplier, one is assigned to you.

Staying on the SCO can be the better choice when every fixed offer on PUCO's chart for Enbridge Gas Ohio sits above recent default periods, when a monthly fee or an early termination fee wipes out the gap, or when you may move soon. An early termination fee belongs to a supplier contract, not to the default. The risk to weigh on a fixed offer is a rate that turns variable once its term ends. Our guide to staying on the default covers the trade-off.

How does gas aggregation work in Enbridge Gas Ohio territory?

Enbridge says an aggregation customer's bill lists a named supplier in the Current Charges section, typically with the name of the municipality, and shows the named aggregator for the program.

The statewide rules for gas aggregation, including the right to opt out every two years, are in Ohio Revised Code 4929.26 and our Ohio energy choice guide.

What happens when an Enbridge supplier contract ends?

At Enbridge, residential and small business customers whose supplier contract or opt-in aggregation program expires without a renewal return to Enbridge's standard service offer (SSO) for up to two billing periods. They are then moved to the SCO and assigned to a participating SCO supplier.

Your supplier must send you a written notice forty-five to ninety days before a residential contract ends. If the contract does not renew by itself, that notice must say which service you will default to (Ohio Administrative Code 4901:1-29-10). Where it applies, a contract must also say that a customer who returns to the utility on their own may be charged a price other than its tariff rate (Ohio Administrative Code 4901:1-29-11).

Our natural gas rates guide explains how to return to the SCO sooner.

Where can you read more about Enbridge Gas Ohio's gas rates?

Our Ohio energy choice guide explains the program across the state. The other gas utilities have their own pages: Columbia gas of Ohio rates, Duke Energy Ohio gas rates and CenterPoint Ohio gas rates, plus the Ohio gas rates overview.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Enbridge's rates page list both an SSO and an SCO?

Enbridge's rates and tariffs page lists a standard service offer rate and a standard choice offer rate, and says both vary each month with market prices. PUCO's SCO guide says the SSO rate is the same as the SCO rate. Enbridge uses the SSO for up to two billing periods after a contract expires, then the SCO.

Does Enbridge charge a fee to move from the SCO to a supplier?

Enbridge says there is no termination fee to switch from the SCO or the monthly retail rate to an Energy Choice agreement with a supplier. A supplier's contract is a different matter, because it may charge an early termination fee when you leave it, so read that contract before you sign.

How long can an Enbridge supplier switch take?

Enbridge says that moving directly from one natural gas supplier to another may take up to two billing cycles. It also says you should not lose gas service at any point during the switch. Your supplier contract and the utility's confirmation notice give the dates that apply to you.

What does an Enbridge bill show if my community runs an aggregation?

Enbridge says the Current Charges section lists a named supplier and typically the name of your municipality, along with the named aggregator for your program. Customers with their own Energy Choice agreement see their chosen supplier and its contact details instead. Check that section to see which plan you are on.

Does Enbridge publish a list of the communities it serves?

Yes. Enbridge's rates and tariffs page links a list of communities served. We do not copy the list, because it can change. Check it, or ask Enbridge, if you are unsure whether your address is in the territory that PUCO's Enbridge chart covers.
