Duke Energy Ohio Gas Rates: The SSO, Your Bill and Your Choices
Duke Energy Ohio gas rates start with a standard service offer (SSO), the price of the gas itself when you have not picked a supplier, which replaced gas cost recovery (GCR) on April 1, 2026. The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) chart puts it at $1.0147 per Ccf for October 1 – November 1, 2026. PUCO's Duke chart prints it per Ccf, one hundred cubic feet.

PUCO's gas bill guide says customers on the SSO keep buying their gas from their local distribution company, which here is Duke. PUCO's note on its Duke historical chart says that from April 1, 2026 the rates shown are the SSO, not the GCR. The 2026 table labels each row (GCR) or (SSO).
Our Duke Energy Ohio gas price to compare page tracks the number and when it resets. Apples to Apples Duke gas Ohio shows how to read PUCO's chart, and the natural gas rates guide compares all four utilities.
How have Duke Energy Ohio gas rates moved over the past year?
The default follows the gas market, which PUCO says can change dramatically from one month to the next (PUCO's SCO guide). In the last twelve periods we hold for Duke, the lowest default was $0.280 per Ccf (January 2 – February 1, 2026) and the highest was $1.0574 per Ccf (August 3 – August 31, 2026). The rate name column shows which rows are the GCR and which are the SSO.
| Period | Rate | Rate name |

| October 1 – November 1, 2026 | $1.0147 per Ccf | SSO |
| September 1 – September 30, 2026 | $0.9949 per Ccf | SSO |
| August 3 – August 31, 2026 | $1.0574 per Ccf | SSO |

| November 3 – November 30, 2025 | $0.340 per Ccf | GCR |
Against a year earlier, today's default is up 120.6% from $0.460 per Ccf (October 1 – November 2, 2025), the period covering most of the same dates a year earlier. The earlier figure carries a different rate name, so the comparison spans two names for the default.

What is on your Duke Energy Ohio gas bill besides the gas?
Besides the gas, PUCO's gas bill guide says a gas bill carries a usage charge made up of a residential firm transportation charge, a Percentage of Income Payment Plan (PIPP) rider and a gross receipts tax. The transportation rate charge can change quarterly, and the bill shows a 13-month usage history.
PUCO's Duke chart describes the SSO as the NYMEX month-end settlement price plus a retail price adjustment per dekatherm, a measure of the gas's heat content, "adjusted for the Btu and loss gas factors and adjusted quarterly for reconciliation". The gas bill guide adds that Duke and CenterPoint have additional items included. For Duke it names a standard service offer cost reconciliation rider, which trues up some adjustments quarterly and is added to the SSO rate.
Under Ohio Administrative Code 4901:1-13-11, every bill shows the gas rate per Mcf or Ccf. A residential bill must also carry a notice about comparing supplier offers with the SCO or, where it applies, the GCR rate. Duke's default is an SSO now, so read how the notice on your own bill words it.
PUCO's guide says gas bought from a local utility is not subject to Ohio sales or use tax, while gas bought from a supplier is. Check your own Duke bill to see which charges carry it.
How does energy choice work for Duke Energy Ohio gas customers?
You may buy your gas from a supplier certified by PUCO instead of taking Duke's SSO. Duke still delivers the gas. PUCO's Duke chart lists offers, and PUCO says it shows only certified suppliers that are actively enrolling.
PUCO says customers of most gas utilities can shop unless they are in PIPP Plus (PUCO's SCO guide). Ohio's gas rule also bars a supplier from enrolling a customer who has unpaid balances with the utility, unless there is a plan to pay them (Ohio Administrative Code 4901:1-29-06). PUCO adds that there is no deadline to choose a supplier, and that if you make no choice you keep receiving service through your local distribution company (PUCO's FAQs).
Your supplier must send you a written notice forty-five to ninety days before a residential contract ends. If the contract does not renew by itself, that notice must say which service you will default to (Ohio Administrative Code 4901:1-29-10). Our natural gas rates guide explains how to return to the default.
A city or county may also run a gas aggregation program under Ohio Revised Code 4929.26. Our Ohio energy choice guide explains how those programs fit in.
Staying on the SSO can be the better choice when every fixed offer on PUCO's chart for Duke Energy Ohio sits above recent default periods, when a monthly fee or an early termination fee wipes out the gap, or when you may move soon. An early termination fee belongs to a supplier contract, not to the default. The risk to weigh on a fixed offer is a rate that turns variable once its term ends. Our guide to staying on the default covers the trade-off.

Frequently asked questions
Do I pay sales tax on Duke's gas SSO?
PUCO's gas bill guide says gas bought from a local utility is not subject to Ohio sales or use tax, while gas bought from a supplier is. It adds that county sales tax is not in a supplier's quoted rate. Check your own Duke bill to see which charges carry tax.
Does a Duke gas bill show the gross receipts tax?
Yes. Ohio's bill rule requires a gas company that allows competitive gas service on its system, as Duke does, to show the total gross receipts tax charge in dollars and cents and the tax rate. PUCO's gas bill guide says the utility pays this tax and includes it in its per-Ccf rate.
What is the SSO cost reconciliation rider on a Duke gas bill?
PUCO's gas bill guide says it is a Duke rider that trues up, each quarter, some of the adjustments from the move from the GCR to the SSO and other balancing services. It is added to the standard service offer rate to make up the SSO price that Duke customers pay.
Is there a PUCO tool that breaks down a Duke gas bill?
PUCO's gas bill page links each utility's own bill explainer, Duke's included, and offers a natural gas rate calculator that shows a breakdown of the charges on your bill. Check the calculator's result against your own bill, because your usage and the date of your bill change the figures.
