Apples to Apples Illuminating Company: How to Read PUCO's Chart
PUCO's Apples to Apples Illuminating Company chart opens with a box that states The Illuminating Company's price to compare, 11.24¢ per kWh for October 1 – December 31, 2026, and then lists supplier offers. Some rows hide more than the rate column shows, such as pop-up notes and flat monthly prices. This guide shows where to look, and how this territory overlaps Ohio Edison's.
Updated
In short
- The box gives The Illuminating Company's price to compare for supply only, and a footnote covers electric-heating customers.
- Eight of its nine counties also appear in Ohio Edison's tariff, so your bill decides which chart to open.
- A row that prints a rate of zero may be a flat monthly price, so check the Monthly Fee column.
- Offer Details and details pop-ups are written by suppliers, so read them before you enroll.
What is in the box at the top of The Illuminating Company chart?
The box gives The Illuminating Company's residential price to compare "for the generation supply portion of your bill" and the dates it covers. That reads 11.24¢ per kWh for October 1 – December 31, 2026.

PUCO, the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, runs the chart on Energy Choice Ohio. Ohio Energy Savings is not PUCO.
A footnote tells qualifying electric-heating customers that their figure may differ from September through May, and to read the message section of the bill for it. The box also says the offer prices below cover generation only. The chart prints the figure as $0.1124 per kWh.
The figure is the benchmark for the standard service offer (SSO), the default supply The Illuminating Company provides if you never pick a supplier. Our Illuminating Company rates guide covers the heating rules and the rest of the territory.
Under the box, the chart links to a sign-up for The Illuminating Company rate change alerts and to PUCO's price-to-compare history for the company.
Which counties does The Illuminating Company share with Ohio Edison?
Eight of the nine counties in The Illuminating Company's tariff also appear in Ohio Edison's tariff. Lake County is the exception. None of the nine appears in Toledo Edison's tariff.
- Parent company
- FirstEnergy
- Fuel
- Electricity
- How the default rate changes
- The FirstEnergy Ohio companies reset the default generation rate each June 1 and adjust it at the start of later quarters as riders update. PUCO's chart states the period the current rate covers.
- PUCO chart number
- 6
That overlap matters because the two charts each state their own box. Open the chart for the utility named on your bill, not the one a county list suggests. FirstEnergy files this company's tariff under the name The Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company, which can help you match paperwork.
Check the heading too. The chart for this territory is headed The Illuminating Company, and the box names the company again in its first sentence. If either says Ohio Edison or Toledo Edison, you have opened a neighbor's chart.
If you moved recently, check the utility named on your latest bill. A neighboring tariff does not become yours because the county name matches.
For the other two FirstEnergy charts, see Apples to Apples Ohio Edison and Apples to Apples Toledo Edison.
What can a row on the Apples to Apples Illuminating Company chart hide?
Each row shows the supplier's name, mailing address and phone number, then the offer's columns. A padlock icon sits beside Fixed in the Rate Type column. Some cells carry a details link, and the Offer Details link opens a pop-up note. The supplier writes those notes, not PUCO.
The rate column does not always tell the whole story. When we read this chart on October 1, 2026, one row printed a rate of $0.0000 per kWh and a monthly fee in the tens of dollars. Its Offer Details note said the plans are priced by month, tiered by usage, with limits and eligibility rules, and that utility fees and taxes are separate.
Read that kind of row as a flat monthly price, not as power with no rate. For what the Monthly Fee column means, see Apples to Apples Ohio. Divide the monthly fee by your monthly usage to get its cost per kWh, then compare that with the box.
PUCO's chart notice says suppliers can change offers at any time, so treat each row as a snapshot. Check the offer's terms on the supplier's page before you sign.
The Terms of Service link in each row opens the supplier's own page for that offer, and it is the one to read before you enroll. The Company Url link opens the supplier's own site. PUCO writes neither page, and its notice puts the accuracy of each offer on the supplier.
How would a 24-month offer read against The Illuminating Company box?
Imagine a made-up offer that prints $0.1064 per kWh against a box of $0.1124 per kWh. It runs 24 months, has no monthly fee, and carries an early termination fee of $200.00. The home uses 600 kWh a month, a made-up figure.
| Scenario | Default, if the box never changed | Made-up offer |
|---|---|---|
| Leave after month 10, paying the fee | $674.40 | $838.40 |
| Stay all 24 months | $1,618.56 | $1,532.16 |
Staying the whole term, the offer costs $86.40 less than the default would. Leaving after month 10 costs $164.00 more. The default can reset up or down during a term, so the default column is not a forecast.
A 24-month term runs through at least one change in the default. If the default rises, a fixed offer looks better in hindsight, and if it falls, the offer looks worse. The chart cannot tell you which, so weigh the term as well as the rate.
Staying on the default is the better call when every fixed offer sits above the box, when a monthly fee or an early termination fee erases the gap, or when you may move before the term ends. A short term limits the risk, and a long one raises it.

Frequently asked questions
What does a rate of zero on the Illuminating Company chart mean?
If a row prints zero in the $/kWh column, the supplier may charge a flat monthly price instead, shown in the Monthly Fee column. Open the row's Offer Details note to see how the plan is priced and what limits apply. Compare its monthly price with your own monthly supply cost.
What do the details links open on the Illuminating Company chart?
Small pop-ups with notes the supplier wrote about its offer, its early termination fee or its promotion. PUCO displays them but does not write them. Because the wording differs by supplier, read each note, then check the offer's terms of service on the supplier's own page before you enroll.
Can an offer on the Illuminating Company chart change before I sign up?
Yes. PUCO's chart notice says suppliers are responsible for the accuracy of their own offers and that offers can change at any time. It tells you to be certain you will get the price you expect. Check the rate and terms on the supplier's sign-up page before you agree.
Can I compare two offers side by side on the Illuminating Company chart?
Yes. Tick the check box at the start of each row you want, then click the Click to Compare header. The chart opens the ticked offers together in one pop-up, with the same columns as the table. Tick only the rows on your short list so the comparison stays readable.
