In short
- 35 dated events from 9 Ohio electric and gas utilities, newest first, each with a source link.
- A rate decision is a PUCO order, settlement or plan approval; a default rate change moves the supply price.
- An order date can differ from the date a bill changes, because tariffs follow the order.
What was the latest PUCO AEP Ohio rate decision?
It is PUCO's April 1, 2026 order in case 25-392-EL-AIR, summarized in PUCO orders new AEP Ohio distribution rates. Ohio Energy Savings is not PUCO: we summarize PUCO's own releases and link each source. This page records events we found. It is not every Ohio rate filing.
What is the difference between a rate decision and a default rate change?
On this page a rate decision is a PUCO order, settlement or plan approval. A distribution rate case sets the charges for delivering energy, and an electric security plan sets how a utility buys default supply. A default rate change moves the supply price for customers who have not picked a supplier.
Standard service offer (SSO). In PUCO's words, "the default rate for generation supply an electric distribution utility charges a customer who decides not to shop" (how electric generation rates are set).
Price to compare. The per-kilowatt-hour benchmark for that default, printed on your electric bill. Our price to compare pages track it.
Electric security plan (ESP). A multi-year plan PUCO approves for a utility. In each plan listed below, the utility keeps buying default supply through competitive bidding.
At Columbia Gas of Ohio, Enbridge Gas Ohio and CenterPoint Energy Ohio the gas default is the Standard Choice Offer (SCO), which PUCO says changes monthly (how SCO rates are set). Duke Energy Ohio's gas default has been a standard service offer since April 1, 2026. See natural gas rates.
How did default electric rates change on the same day for several utilities?
- June 1, 2026: the price to compare rose for all 6 utilities.
- June 1, 2025: the price to compare rose for all 6 utilities.
- June 1, 2024: the price to compare fell for all 6 utilities.
- June 1, 2023: the price to compare rose for 5 utilities and fell for 1.

PUCO's May 2023 release said default prices were "scheduled to increase June 1 because of upward pressure on wholesale electricity markets." Its May 2024 notice says energy and capacity prices are updated each June from wholesale auction results, and that tariff filings are subject to final review. We list an entry only where we found a PUCO release: none for June 1, 2026 and none for Duke Energy Ohio on June 1, 2025.
How do you read each entry on this page?
The heading gives the day a default rate took effect, PUCO decided or published a notice, or an auction ran. Dollar amounts are the ones PUCO or an auction site states. We do not work out what a change means for your bill.
Up or down is the direction the source states for that utility's revenues or rates. No single direction stated marks an entry whose source states none: a plan whose parts move different ways, an auction for future supply, a change in a rate's name, or a correction.
What should you check when a default rate change is announced?
Check who supplies you first. PUCO's May 2023 release said customers enrolled with a supplier, or in a local aggregation program, would not be affected by that year's default-rate changes. If you have a supplier, your contract sets your rate, so check when the term ends and what the rate becomes afterward.
Compare an offer with the current price to compare, add any monthly fee, and count an early termination fee if you might leave early. Staying on the default can be the better choice when every fixed offer is above it. Staying put can also make sense if you might move house before a term would end.
We are a broker. Suppliers pay us a commission when a household enrolls, and we also charge a service fee. There's no cost to check, and you see the fee terms in your offer. The Apples to Apples chart lists current offers, our price to compare lookup finds your utility, and our energy choice in Ohio guide explains switching.

The settlement also calls for Duke Energy Ohio to seek PUCO approval to move to a market-based approach for sourcing the gas commodity for customers not served by a supplier or community aggregation.

PUCO said AEP Ohio's distribution rates had last been revised in 2011.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I read a PUCO order like the AEP Ohio rate decision myself?
PUCO's pages point to its Docketing Information System for case documents. Look up the case number there, such as 25-392-EL-AIR. Each entry here gives the case number when its source states one. Orders run long, so start with PUCO's news release for a summary.
Does a PUCO rate case change the price to compare?
Not directly. A rate case sets distribution rates, the cost of delivering power. PUCO says wholesale auction results make up most of the price to compare. A single bill can move for both reasons, so check which part of your bill changed before you act.
Is this list of Ohio rate increases complete?
No. It holds the events we could verify from a primary source, and we leave out any we cannot check. Rate filings, riders and orders that we have not recorded still exist. For the full docket, search PUCO's Docketing Information System by utility or case number.
Why can an order date differ from the date my bill changes?
After an order, a utility files tariffs, subject to PUCO approval. For the FirstEnergy utilities, PUCO's February 2026 rehearing entry set the effective date for updated tariffs after its November 2025 order. Your bill follows the tariff's date, not the order date.
Does a gas distribution rate case change the price of the gas itself?
PUCO said of its Enbridge Gas Ohio order that "the price of the natural gas commodity is not affected by today's order," and of Columbia Gas of Ohio's settlement that "the cost of natural gas is not a part of this rate case." A rate case sets delivery charges. The gas commodity has its own default rate.
