What should you know about Ohio Energy Savings?

We are certified by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) as a Power Broker (Certificate No. 26-155492E) and a Retail Natural Gas Broker (Certificate No. 26-155491G). We work only with suppliers certified by PUCO.

We are not a utility and not a supplier. Your local utility still delivers your power and handles outages.

In Ohio's rules, power brokerage means taking on the contractual and legal responsibility for selling or arranging the generation supply for an Ohio customer, without taking title to the power. In plain words, a broker does not own the electricity it arranges.

  • We help you look at offers from suppliers and arrange your enrollment.
  • We do not generate electricity, and we do not deliver it.
  • We do not run the Energy Choice Ohio site or certify suppliers. PUCO does both.

You can check whether any company is certified on the Energy Choice Ohio site, which PUCO runs.

How does Ohio energy choice work?

Ohio law lets you choose who supplies your electricity. Our guide to Ohio energy choice explains the program step by step.

If you never choose a supplier, your utility supplies you at its default rate, called the standard service offer (SSO). The number PUCO labels the price to compare is that default rate for the generation part of your bill. You can read it on our price to compare pages, and PUCO's Apples to Apples chart lets you compare offers anytime. Our Apples to Apples guide explains the chart.

A supplier's offer only helps if it beats that number over the full term, after any fees. Staying on the default rate can be a fair choice.

How does Ohio Energy Savings earn money?

How do we keep our pages honest?

We write from public sources and review every page before it goes live. We run no paid rankings, and we do not name one supplier as the top pick. When a fact is not verified, we leave it out rather than guess.

What do we publish on this site?

Our rate pages cover 6 electric utilities and 4 natural gas utilities. Every rate shows the period it covers, the source it came from and the day we read it. Our dataset holds 406 dated rate rows, and the oldest AEP Ohio row goes back to January 2022.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ohio Energy Savings a utility or an energy supplier?

No. We are certified by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) as a Power Broker (Certificate No. 26-155492E) and a Retail Natural Gas Broker (Certificate No. 26-155491G). We are not a utility and not a supplier. The supplier you choose supplies the electricity itself, and your local utility keeps delivering it and handling outages.

Is Ohio Energy Savings connected to PUCO or my utility?

No. We are not affiliated with PUCO or with any Ohio utility. We name them only to say whose rates, rules or service we are describing. PUCO is the state regulator that certifies suppliers and runs the Energy Choice Ohio comparison site. Your utility bills and serves you as before.

Where can I check that an Ohio energy supplier is certified?

The Energy Choice Ohio site, run by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, lists certified electric suppliers and certified natural gas suppliers. Check a company there before you sign anything. You can also use the same site to compare offers on PUCO's Apples to Apples chart.

Where do the rates on this site come from?

They come from PUCO's own charts on the Energy Choice Ohio site. Each rate on our pages shows the period it covers, a link to its source and the day we read it. Our methodology page explains the datasets, how often we refresh them and what a page says when no rate is published.
